Elizabeth (Betsy) Burch Schopler

In Remembrance
June 26, 1932 - July 26, 2023

Elizabeth (Betsy) Burch Schopler, born in Bonita California 6/26/1932, died 7/26/2023 in the assisted living home she had moved to 3 months earlier.

Betsy’s charming warmth, intellect, and inclusiveness served her well throughout her life. She juggled professorial egos as a secretary for the psychometric department at UNC-CH where she worked from 07/14/1969-07/20/1971 and from 10/01/1975-09/30/1993. She also finished her master’s in public health 5/1978. Betsy kept her cool with all kinds of bridge partners and opponents becoming a life master at an early age. She especially enjoyed playing with her family whether playing at a tournament or during every other day duplicate bridge club games. She tried her hardest but was okay if her partner made a mistake. If her partner made many mistakes it turned into “giggle bridge” which was fine. She made friends on the ultimate frisbee field playing into her 40s and becoming the staff sponsor for the first Ultimate Frisbee Club at UNC in the mid to late 1970s. Her holiday gatherings and open-door policy for anyone who wanted to join in for music, meals, or charades are remembered by her family and friends and too many people to mention.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Susie Schopler/Mitch Renkow, Bobby/Elley Schopler, Tom/Carol Schopler; seven grandchildren and their spouses: Scott/Brittany Schopler, Tim Renkow/Spring Day, Samuel Schopler, Rosie Renkow/Adrien Orozco, Daniel Schopler, Eric/Melina Schopler, Justin Schopler, and step-granddaughter Ella Brandford; two great grandchildren Ariel Javier Orozco and Willamina Mae Judy Schopler.

A memorial celebration will be held on October 1st, 2023. For details please contact Tom Schopler ; or Bobby Schopler
